Recording of crowd from balcony of room 404 at Taj hotel at Appolo Bunder. The noise was astounding. It seemed more compacted than Time Square. Sections of the crowd would run forward screaming. The ships and boats at the waterfront hooted intermittently.
Varanasi, Jan 4/5 1995
Stayed in room 404 again. Recordings of boat trip down the Ganges. Dolby always off. Cham cham, dhab dhab dhab, the red dye runs into the river as the women washes her sari. Three feet away a group of women are carrying out their morning ablutions. A dead cow is being pulled by a small boat to the middle of the river to be drowned. The sound of the oars against the water are obviously amplified.
